- Unicode resource, 17 October 1998
- =================================
-
- The !Unicode resources directory can be thought of as a system wide
- resource in the same way as !Fonts, !Scrap and !System. It should be
- placed inside your !Boot application, in '!Boot.Resources' (restart
- the machine after copying it there), to ensure that it is seen by the
- computer when the machine starts up.
-
- The Unicode resource stores a set of mapping tables that convert between
- different character encodings. These basically take some number which
- represents a particular letter or symbol, and work out what letter or
- symbol should be displayed. This is required for true internationalisation
- of the operating system (enabling display of Japanese, Korean, Chinese,
- Cyrillic, etc. text). Unicode is the first step in providing this
- functionality throughout RISC OS.
-
- Versions of !Browse prior to 1.28 Beta (04-Dec-1997) have an 'Encodings'
- directory inside them. The functionality of this is now inside Unicode.
- The 'Encodings' directory of older browsers does not need to be copied
- into the new browser.
-
